Khalti Lake: The Frozen Turquoise Wonder

Khalti Lake is one of the most striking natural landmarks in the Ghizer District of Gilgit-Baltistan. Formed by a natural damming of the Gilgit River, this high-altitude lake is famous for its deep turquoise waters and its unique transition through the seasons. Located near the village of Gupis, it serves as a serene gateway for travelers heading deeper into the Phander or Yasin Valleys.

The Experience

Known primarily as a sanctuary for freshwater trout, Khalti Lake offers a tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with the rushing rivers nearby. The water is so clear that it often creates a perfect mirror reflection of the surrounding arid mountains and the lush orchards lining its banks.

• A Winter Spectacle: Khalti Lake is legendary for completely freezing over during the peak of winter (December to February). The ice becomes so thick that locals and tourists can walk, slide, and even play football on its surface—a rare and thrilling experience in Pakistan.

• The Trout Capital: The lake is fed by icy glacial streams, making it the ideal habitat for trout. A visit here is incomplete without enjoying a meal of traditionally fried trout at one of the lakeside cafes.

• A Scenic Hub: Its location in the Gupis Valley makes it a perfect pit stop. The area surrounding the lake is dotted with apricot and apple trees, which burst into white and pink blossoms in the spring and turn a fiery gold in the autumn.
