Gilgit Baltistan jeep Safari is a popular adventure holiday in Pakistan.
Gilgit-Baltistan is a Pakistani territory that was previously known as the Northern Areas. It shares borders with Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province to the west, Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor to the north, China to the northeast, Pakistan’s Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) to the south, and India’s Jammu and Kashmir to the southeast. In 1970, the Gilgit Agency, the Baltistan District of the Ladakh Wazarat, the states of Hunza and Nagar, and the Northern Areas were merged into a single administrative unit known as Northern Areas.
Gilgit-Baltistan, whose administrative centre is the town of Gilgit, encompasses an area of 72,971 km2 (28,174 mi2) and has an estimated population close to one million. Pakistan considers the territory to be distinct from Kashmir, whereas India considers it to be a part of the larger disputed territory of Kashmir, which India and Pakistan have been disputing since 1947.
Along the Karakoram Highway in Gilgit-Baltistan, there are over 20,000 examples of rock art and petroglyphs, concentrated in ten major sites between Hunza and Shatial.
Invaders, merchants, and pilgrims who travelled along the trade route, as well as locals, left the carvings. The earliest include single animals, triangular men, and hunting scenes in which the animals are larger than the hunters and date back to between 5000 and 1000 BCE. These engravings were chiselled into the rock using stone tools, and their deep patina attests to their age. From various inscriptions, the archaeologist Karl Jettmar has pieced together the history of the region and published his findings in Rock Carvings and Inscriptions in the Northern Areas of Pakistan and Between Gandhara and the Silk Roads – Rock Carvings along the Karakoram Highway.
